A walkway on your lot and a sidewalk along the street follow different rules, so know which one you have before you call.
Walks on Your Lot
A walk from the driveway to the door, or a path down the side yard, is private work on your lot. Width, shape and finish are up to you. A broom finish gives better grip than a smooth one, which matters near sprinklers.
Curves look good but take more forming. Ask the contractor to price a straight and a curved layout side by side.
The Sidewalk Along the Street
The public sidewalk between your yard and the curb is often in the city's area, even if you care for it. Work there may need an An encroachment permit lets work happen in the public street area, such as a curb cut or the driveway apron.. Chula Vista lists an Encroachment Permit Application on its forms page. Check with the city before anyone breaks out a panel.
Trip Edges and Lifted Panels
Roots and clay soil can lift one panel above the next. That edge is easy to trip on. Some lifts can be ground down. Others need the panel torn out and poured again. Our repair page covers how to choose.
Steps and Landings
Concrete steps at the front door need even risers and a landing wide enough to stand on while the door opens. Ask the contractor to check the step heights against code as part of the estimate.
